The Eagles are screeching

The 76 Eagles were still milling around, but in the last few days, they were appearing in pairs, and instead of passively staring at people, they started to approach people walking alone - minorities mainly - and started to ask questions, most people they talked to start to back off, especially as the militia members start to pat suspicious bulges on their hips and chest.

Getting in earshot, or having one approached you quickly reveal the fact that the questions where a mish-mash asking the legality of the person’s presence in the united states or if they had anything to do with the Phantom Thieves.

They’re careful not to actually touch anyone, but the tone of their voice, the patting of their concealed weapons, the slight smirk that appears when they successfully spooked someone, and their aggressive stance made it clear they hold no good will towards the unfortunate target of their attention.

“This is Candace Sierra at Wolf News, in light of the recent death of Reverend James Poplett, and the appearance of a second calling card, there is worry in the streets of Los Angeles over the vigilante actions of the Phantom Thieves and the Inquisitors. Today we have a panel on the issue of this brand of vigilantism, whether if there is any justification for taking the law into the hands and what causes people to take such actions.”

All around the city, men and women dressed in knocked-off fatigues, or biker-style vests can be seen loitering around and watching people with alarming frequency. Whether in camo or vest and jeans, they all have patches depicting an eagle carrying a musket rifle in its talons and wearing a tricorn hat.

As the rumors started to fly about their presence - especially when they start to step into people’s personal space to ‘examine’ them, the answer soon came in a series of flyers posted on telephone polls all over, and some obnoxious man covered all the public corkboards in UCLA with them, and they all have the same message:

“The 76 EAGLES are recruiting! FREEDOM is OUR CREED, WE THE PEOPLE are SICK OF TYRANTS and CRIMINALS ruling our streets! MUST BE 18 or OVER and A PROUD PATRIOT to join!!

Weekends are spent training and excerising OUR FREEDOMS with like-minded fellows, and helping FELLOW AMERICANS! Do not relay on THIEVES to solve our problems, TAKE ACTION WITH YOUR OWN HANDS! You will find we PLAY HARD and FIGHT HARD!

Miles Glazier will ACCEPT all TRUE PATRIOTS, visit 76EAGLES.US for how to sign up to SAVE AMERICA!!!!!!!!”

Anyone checking out the website will be blasted with an autoplay clip of the US army reveille, and the site was festooned with enough images of Old Glory, antique guns, and eagles to make one suspect it might be parody, but there is no indications anywhere that it’s anything but sincere, as browsing would lead to photographs of weekend missions, the milita’s newsletter and a mission statement declaring it to be a Milita out to do what the police can’t. The largest button is simply labeled JOIN US, and leads to an application form.

“This is Candace Sierra of Wolf News, coming to you live from the Tend the Flock Charity with a breaking news report. This morning, calling cards for the group known as the “Phantom Thieves” were posted all around the Charity, naming James and Tamara Poplett as their target. Around 7 PM this evening, Pastor James Poplett collapsed for unknown reasons and was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Paramedics who arrived on the scene noticed the children who were housed at the Charity appeared to be malnourished and in poor condition. LAPD arrived on the scene and arrested Tamara and Bartholomew Poplett, as well as several adult caretakers. About thirty children have been taken into protective custody. Had James Poplett survived, he would have been charged as well. We are receiving reports that Tamara Poplett has confessed to using the Charity to enrich her family, as well as to several counts of child abuse. The Popletts are currently in prison awaiting charges.”

“As for the Phantom Thieves, a video was delivered anonymously to the Wolf News station in LA an hour ago. After being checked by local authorities, Wolf News has reviewed the video, the contents of which we are sharing with you today.”


A grainy video appears of a darkened silhouette. The voice is obviously altered and distorted.

“Good evening. We are the true Phantom Organization that seeks to right the wrongs of society. We are the Phantom Inquisition. We have chapters all over the world, and we have a message to deliver to the world tonight - the time of the rich preying upon the poor, the greedy upon the suffering is coming to an end. We will purge every oppressor and tear down this rigged, failed system. From its ashes we will build a new world of freedom and equality. We’re coming for you, and we will kill you. We will not except stolen hearts and confessions, if you have oppressed people and profited from it, your days are numbered.”

The screen fades to black, before returning to Candace.

“Who are these ‘Phantom Inquisitors’? Who are their targets? Who will be the next victims? We go now to our news desk, where our news analysts will break down the situation.”
