Text for thieves, action for all
Ky was thankful he had the day off on New years day, and the day after - it made up for having to work through Christmas, but the LAPD is always on the clock. The man checks his phone - then the burner phone he used to contact his 'associates', the weight of the small budget phone felt especially heavy in his hand, the excuse he rehearsed in his head if one of his coworkers find it was already on repeat in his head as he types into the phone:

Routine check in. Getting info on whose in charge of search for UCLA Perps, see how serious they will be in hunt. Will update with more info.
He pockets the phone, breathing out as he ducks into the cafe near the UCLA campus, the thieves seem to be trying to do the right thing, but he's still not entirely sure if he's doing the right thing as he flashes his ID to the bartender, ordering an espresso he's using to warm his hands. While he's off duty, he's still keeping an eye out of trouble out of habit.
